Journal notes
Cookies in Brief
Short version: this site does not use tracking cookies. The only thing it saves in your browser is your answer to our cookie banner, so that it does not ask you again on every page.
Last updated: October 2026.
What gets stored
When you click accept or decline on the banner, a small entry is written to your browser's local storage. Local storage works a lot like a cookie, but it stays on your device and is not sent along with each page request. The entry contains your choice and nothing else: no identifier, no timestamp trail, no information about what you read.
What is not stored
| Type | Used here? |
|---|---|
| Strictly necessary banner choice (local storage) | Yes |
| Analytics or statistics cookies | No |
| Advertising or retargeting cookies | No |
| Social media or third-party embed cookies | No |
Because nothing optional is set, declining on the banner changes nothing about how the site works for you. Both buttons simply record your answer and close the banner.
So why show a banner?
Since the journal sets no optional cookies, you might wonder why we show a banner. The answer is transparency. Many readers expect to be told what a site stores, and a short, honest notice is better than silence. The banner also links here, so anyone curious can see the full picture in under a minute.
Our hosting provider
The company that serves our pages keeps short-lived technical logs to keep the service running and secure. These logs are not cookies and are not used to track you. Our privacy page describes them in more detail.
Resetting your choice
If you would like the banner to appear again, clear the stored data for this site in your browser settings. In most browsers you can do this from the padlock or site-information icon next to the address bar, under an option such as "site data" or "cookies and site data". Using a private window also shows the banner each time, because private sessions start with empty storage.
Links to other sites
Now and then an article sends you to an outside website. Once you follow such a link, the other site's own cookie rules apply, and they may differ from ours.
